11/16/23

As the leaves begin to fall from the trees and the air turns crisp, Martha's Vineyard transforms into a picturesque wonderland, making it the perfect destination for holiday escapes. All island towns come alive with decorations for the  fall and winter months. With a calendar full of exciting events and festivities. From Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Year's, Martha’s Vineyard offers a unique and enchanting holiday experience. In this blog post, we'll explore the magic of holidays on the Vineyard, including the Fall Festivals, Christmas in Edgartown, New Year Celebrations and suggested activities no matter when you visit the Vineyard in the off season.

Thanksgiving: A Feast for the Senses

Thanksgiving on Martha's Vineyard is a truly special experience. The island's close-knit community comes together to celebrate with gratitude and warmth. Edgartown's charming streets are adorned with wreaths and twinkling lights, creating a festive atmosphere.Local restaurants and Inns offer Thanksgiving feasts that showcase the region's seasonal bounty, including fresh seafood, locally sourced produce, and delectable desserts. You can also participate in the annual Turkey Trot 5K, a fun run that supports a local charity. If you choose to create your own Thanksgiving feast you could order fixings from Morning Glory Farm or Blacksheep in advance for your celebration.  Or if cooking isn't what you want to spend your holiday doing and you just want to enjoy a great meal here are some options; Bitini at the Harbor View in Edgartown & The Blackdog Tavern in Vineyard Haven are accepting reservations for Thanksgiving service.

There is also an offering of Thanksgiving Dinner for Islanders in need. This takes place at the VFW at 14 Towanicut Ave, Oak Bluffs from 12-4 on Thanksgiving Day. If you would like to help with preparations please contact Sharon Brown, 302-602-6829, [email protected]

After your Thanksgiving meal, take a leisurely stroll along Edgartown's picturesque waterfront and enjoy the crisp autumn air. It's a time to reflect on the beauty of the island and the joy of being surrounded by loved ones.

Then Friday November 24th The Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary hosts it’s annual Fall Festival. A celebration of fall that draws hundreds of islanders and visitors. Offering hayrides, crafts, music, food, and wreath making.  A fun event for the whole family.

Christmas in Edgartown: A Winter Wonderland

When December arrives, Edgartown transforms into a winter wonderland straight out of a holiday storybook. The town's historic architecture and cozy streets make it a perfect backdrop for Christmas celebrations.

The annual Christmas in Edgartown event taking place between December 7-10 is a highlight of the holiday season. Activities include a festive parade, caroling, craft fairs, and the lighting of the town's Lighthouse. You can also visit Santa Claus and his reindeer at the Edgartown Harbor, where children and adults alike can embrace the magic of the season.

Throughout December, the boutiques and shops in Edgartown are adorned with holiday decorations, offering unique gifts and local treasures for your holiday shopping and some great sales! Don't forget to sample some hot cocoa or mulled cider as you explore the festive streets.

New Year's Eve: A Memorable Countdown

As the year comes to a close, Martha’s Vineyard knows how to send it off with style. New Year's Eve on the Vineyard is a night to remember, with various restaurants and venues hosting special events and parties.

Whether you prefer an elegant dinner and live music or a lively gathering with friends, there is sure to be a range of options to ring in the New Year.

Martha's Vineyard, and Edgartown in particular, offers a unique and enchanting experience during the fall and winter holidays. From the Fall Wine Festival to the warm Thanksgiving feasts, the festive Christmas spirit, and the lively New Year's celebrations, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

While these hosted events are fun and a great experience during your Vineyard visit there are also plenty of options if you visit during a time when there are no planned events. For example we love winter beach walks- the smell of the ocean air, the quiet beauty of the nature surrounding you invigorates the soul.

Or visit Island Alpaca- open year round this island institution offers the opportunity to not only meet the furry cuties, but also pick up some beautiful, quality alpaca products. Bonus in that they are very warm! There are different activities you can partake in when visiting the farm as well. Click here for more info.

One more of our favorites in the “off” season is to visit the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Offering several exhibitis, guest speakers and often hosting community events, there is always something to enjoy and learn at the MV Museum.

So, if you're looking to create lasting holiday memories in a picturesque coastal town, consider spending your holidays on the Vineyard. Edgartown's warmth, charm, and holiday spirit will make your visit truly magical. Come and experience the beauty of this island paradise during the most wonderful time of the year!
